Diagnostics
How to find out what part of your power window system has failed.
Step 1 Checking the regulator.
The regulator is the mechanical part that connects the motor to the window.
Signs of a broken regulator, The window will not stay in the up position, when
pushing the power window button you hear a loud noise from inside the door.
All signs of a broken regulator.
Step 2 Checking the motor
The best way to check for a bad motor with out using a volt meter.
Open the car door and find the interior light. Turn the key to the on position
make sure the engine is not running. Hold one hand close to the interior light
so that you can see the light reflecting on the palm of your hand. Hold your
other hand next to the power window switch. When you are ready push the
switch either up or down while looking at the palm of your hand. If you can
see the light dim as you push the switch both directions you have found a
bad window motor. If the light does not dim in both directions you need to
test the switch and power supply. Do not rule out the possibility of a bad
motor it could still be at fault do to an open in the motor its self but first you
must test the switch and power supply.
Step 3 Switch and power supply
For this test you will need to use a volt meter
First thing to do is check the fuse make sure its good and has power
(12volts)
Not all vehicles are the same some systems use modules, these systems
will need to be tested by a professional.
If your fuse is good and has 12 volts with the key on and when doing the
motor check your light did not dim at all. The very last test you can do is the
door slam.
Door slam test
Allow 5 minutes with the key off to let the system cool down. After 5 minutes
follow these steps. First Start car, next go to the door that you are having the
problem with and get into the seat. Make sure there is nothing in the way of
closing the door. Finally grasp the door handle firmly with one hand, take
your other hand and place it over the switch. With one motion hold the switch
in the down position and slam the door with out letting up on the switch until
door is closed. You may need to repeat this a few times. If the window starts
to work than your motor is going bad. If you still cant get the window to work,
than most likely you have an open in either the switch, module, or wiring.
